Dr.
Rowan Kilmartin
BVSc MCSc (Animal Chiropractic) Grad. Dip. Animal Chiropractic Chiropractic
IVAS Certified
After graduating
from Queensland University in 1978 BVSc Rowan worked in mixed practice until
1991; In 1992 he moved to Gladstone and concentrated on small animal & equine
practice His interest in greyhound medicine and biomechanics was influenced
by Alex Hauler in 70's and he began greyhound manipulation following Alex's
methods and recommendations during the 80's.
Rowan became
disillusioned by lay people claiming to be "horse chiropractors". As the general
demand for manipulation was increasing he attended Sharon Willoughby's short
course on introduction to equine chiropractic in 1993 in Sydney. In the following
year he attended Willoughby's introduction to canine chiropractic in Melbourne.
After Willoughby there was a concerted effort to organise an animal chiropractic
course in Australia. A post-graduate diploma course was offered to veterinarians,
chiropractors and osteopaths in 1998 at RMIT. Rowan completed this in 1999
and went on to complete a Master of Chiropractic Science (Animal Chiropractic)
in 2001. In order to gauge the interest in complementary veterinary medicine
he undertook a survey on veterinarians perception of complementary and alternative
medicine in 2000. In 2001 he completed the IVAS veterinary acupuncture certificate.
Rowan now practices almost exclusively in manipulative medicine in South East
Queensland. Rowan is actively involved in ongoing research and development
as well as teaching at RMIT University in Melbourne. Rowan is currently president
Australian Veterinary Chiropractic Association.
